Have you ever gotten through a storm, to find yourself in a new environment on the other side? This new environment makes your pre-storm environment seem unrecognizable. The scenario before you, while calm, is vast and uncharted. How do you move forward?
We are living in a VUCA world, a world characterized by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. This is a world in which there is no one right answer with which to move forward. It requires leaders to generate great questions rather than know and give the answers and to hone their adaptability. This requires leaders to apply the antidote to VUCA which is:
- Vision and values – Leaders who collaboratively develop vision based on known conditions and rely strongly on purpose and practiced values engage and inspire people.
- Understanding – They use curiosity, ask questions, welcome ideas and listen to team members which builds trust, integration, and a path on which to collaboratively move forward.
- Clarity – Through hearing diverse perspectives, leaders gain an understanding of the team, organization, and environment within which the organization functions, and can then respond in an informed manner.
- Adaptability – Leaders who are resilient, use cognitive agility, and develop and sustain optimism support themselves and their teams to keep moving forward productively.
These are the times we are living in, VUCA times, times filled with gifts and opportunities.
What of these practices could you take on to strengthen your ability to lead in our VUCA world?
