As 2019 draws to a close, reflecting on the year can support your learning, growth and development. There is a saying that we learn through experience; however, as John Dewey said: “We do not learn from experience… we learn from reflecting on experience.”

Ways to Reflect …
You can ask yourself (I recommend writing out your answers): What went well this year? What did I learn through my experiences? What strengths can I build on? What learning can I put to good use going forward?

… and remember to Celebrate your progress!

Then, as you consider 2020, remember that clarity is key. What is your intention for 2020?

Ways to Set Your Intention …

  1. What would you like to share at the end of 2020 that occurred based on your intention? Write this out. You can even write it as if you were sharing it in December 2020. Put it in a place where you will see it.
An example of intention is: “I will get clear on my personal values and live more fully into them by identifying them, understanding them, sharing them with my team, and practicing them through my behaviours to build integrity, trust, and purpose for me and my team.”
  2. Find a keyword or phrase or picture that represents your intentions throughout the year, something that is easy to recall, that comes to mind quickly. That one word, phrase or image can remind you of your intentions and goals and support you to act in alignment with them consciously.
Key phrases could be: “I lead by being transparent about practicing my values” or “Values are the way” or “I stand for my values” …
  3. Review your intentions throughout the year to keep them at the top of mind – weekly is helpful. In our busy lives, we often lose sight of our intentions. This weekly practice can keep it alive at times when we get distracted.
Review could include questions to oneself, such as “How have I lived my values this week?” “Where could I have lived into my values more fully?” “What was the impact of doing so or not doing so?” “What will I do differently going forward to build on success and learnings?”

If you’re open to sharing, we would love to hear your intention for 2020.

We at Spark Success sincerely wish you, your team and your loved ones a wonderful Holiday Season and amazing 2020!
